COUNTRYFILE CAME TO VISIT THE FARM

As millions of viewers found out in in the Autumn of 2016, we keep very happy, traditional breed pigs in the woodland of our farm in Westonbirt.

Simon, Jolly Nice’s Co-Director, buys our pigs as weaners, from Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park. Adam’s a great advocate for farming, as a farmer, producer and presenter of BBC’s Countryfile. Simon is slightly less seasoned in front of the camera, but we think he did very well!

“Good for the pigs, good for the woodland and especially good for the customer.”

As Adam explains in the episode, the rare breeds that we farm, including Gloucester Old Spot, Tamworth, Berkshire and Iron Age pigs, “fell by the wayside because of fast growing modern pork production.” Adam was surprised how quickly the pigs settled into our woodland after their journey in a trailer, but, Simon explains, this is their natural habitat.

As Adam concludes, not only do our customers benefit, knowing that we produce high welfare free range pork with amazing texture and taste from their movement and varied diet, but the pigs’ foraging also “clears the woodland floor allowing regeneration.”
